"The way I envision and capture the female essence
is reminiscent of how nymphs, deities, water-related goddesses and divine beings were described in ancient mythology."
Suahuatica
Michael DK, better known under the pseudonym for his underwater work as 'Suahuatica', was raised on a sailing ship crossing the Mediterranean during his youth. His deep interest in the underwater world started there.
In contrast, his admiration and fascination with the human but especially female form in aquatic environments came after his study on the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague (2005-2009, BA in Photography).
Specific, iconic work like Wanderer above the Sea of Fog from painter Caspar David Friedrich and especially the intense street photography of Trent Parke deeply influenced his views on composition, lighting and the importance of the juxtaposition of a human being and surrounding environment. The water this all is captured in adds an almost impressionistic quality to many of his images, something he is aware and appreciative of. The way he envisions and captures the female essence is reminiscent of how nymphs, deities, water-related goddesses, and divine beings were described in ancient mythology such as Aphrodite, Amphitrite, and Nehalennia.
